Twelfth Night
In the summer of 2005 I was asked to design the November production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night in the Little Theatre at Cal State Northridge. I was happy to take it excited to be mentoring the students that would be working with me.
The show proved to be very challenging for all of the designers. Early the director asked for the absolute minimum in the way of scenery, costumes and lighting. This evolved into having a minimal unit set, but I was presented with the challenge of creating an interesting look with a white set utilizing none to few transitions in the lighting.
I decided to try something I had never thought of before, and the director agreed with the idea for this particular production. No matter the setting, the basic stage wash stayed the same. The only transitions and looks in the show were established with the cyc. This meant that the illumination levels of the daylight scenes were the same as the night time levels, but the cyc gave cues to time of day.
